Russia will Attempt to Charge NASA Astronaut with a Crime

According to Arstechnica.com, in 2018, the Russian Soyuz MS-09 vehicle was docked to the International Space Station, where a small hole with a circumference of a finger was found. The August 2018 was more of an embarrassment than an actual harm, as no no astronaut or cosmonaut was in danger from the small hole. The 2 mm breach was found when the module of the Soyuz MS-09 was docked into the International Space Station. Of course, the hole could have depressurized the station in two weeks had it not been found and fixed; however, the cosmonauts found the hole and patched it with epoxy, and the Soyuz aircraft flew its two cosmonauts back safely at the end of the six-month mission.

So what is really a crime here? Roscosmos which is the company overseeing russian spacecrafts, reported that it had handed its investigation results to the law enforcement who would then determine whether crime should be charged.

While most tended to agree that the hole was caused by manufacturing or testing defect, the Russian government began to entertain a rumor that a disgruntled NASA astronaut drilled the hole. Since the completion of the investigation, the Russian media has changed its tune, saying the hole was drilled after a romance had gone sour. NASA has fought back against both of these seemingly ridiculous accusations.

NASA had actually detected immediate depressurization in August 2018 and also knew that none of the NASA astronauts were near the depressurization hole when the pressure began to leak out. NASA had shared this information with the Russian government to clear its name at the time.

Although Russians and the Americans had been mostly amicable with regards to space, that might not be so reliable in the future, as in the most recent incident, Russian military shot down its own satellite, which caused such a dangerous situation for the astronauts on the space station, that they had to shelter inside the spacecraft for more than two hours. Planned spacewalk also had to be delayed.

The tension rises, but it is also true that Russia will be meeting with the U.S. in Russia next year. They might be able to clear up the air about a few things, or certainly, that would be the desired outcome.

Omicron Threatens Recovery

As the world recovers from the Delta variant, another variant is coming into the picture: Omicron. With origins in Africa, the Omicron is known to be even more infectious than the Delta variant, although not much else is known. Pres. Biden attempted to reassure the nation by stating that the Omicron has less threatening impact than the Delta, although all are encouraged to vaccinate.

CDC recently opened up the Covid-19 booster shot for all individuals above the age of 18. Although the eligibility had been opened for more people, the CDC had focused on those above the age of 50 to receive them first, as they are considered to be the most vulnerable. However, as of today, CDC is recommending boosters for all Americans above the age of 18.

Air travel has become restricted once more, with travels into and out of Africa being regulated. As governments attempt to stifle the new possible onslaught of this new variant, people across the globe are showing their tiredness and weariness at yet another possible lockdown during the holidays.

Europe saw riots prior to the announcement of the Omicron, as anti-vaxxers refused to deal with the governments’ lockdown attempts. Rotterdam saw at least two dead after the rioters were shot by the police and burned down police cars.

Many continue to be concerned by the potential economic impact of this new variant, as well as whether it might have as severe of an impact as the Delta variant.

American Cities See Crimes Rise since 2004

Washington D.C. saw its 200th homicide this year, which is the highest threshold for homicide since 2003. A man was shot at a gas station in Southeast Washington just after 10:15 PM. The victim was identified as Dawann Saunders. He was just 30 years old.

Homicide had been falling until 2012 and staggered until 2021, when the homicide rate rose past 2004 levels. However, this trend is not isolated to Washington, D.C.; 29 cities all saw a rise in crime compared with September data from last year, according to Council on Criminal Justice.

FBI reported that killings have increased 30 percent since 2020 across the country. Baltimore for example, saw more than 300 killings for the 7th year, homicides in Philadelphia reached 497 on Monday, which is 13 percent higher than this time last year.

At the moment, reason for the killings is unclear. And as cities are dealing with the shift in priority of seeing crime as a public health emergency rather than police intervention event, it is currently difficult to tell exactly what the correct line of action might be.

D.C. police union attributes the rise in homicides to changes in policing after the 2020 social unrest after the murder of George Floyd. Activists claim that these new policing limitations are preventing police brutality, but critics believe that this limitation is preventing effective crime minimization.

There are also 200 less D.C. officers than last year, as more than half of the 417 members left since June 2020 and did so before being eligible for retirement.

Unfortunately, the rise of gun violence is still concentrated in high-risk groups, and the data continues to confirm this. DC is trying multiple methods such as introducing programs to schools, diverting calls from the police on certain mental health concerns, boosting job trainings for people and investing in housing.

The results seen in DC if improved, could be a model for the rest of the country to follow. Most seem to agree however, that police alone should not be the only ones keeping peace in the city.

Australian Red Crabs are occupying the Season of Greetings on the road

Photo from Parks Australia’s Twitter

Christmas Island in Australia is currently booming from massive migration of red crabs all over the roads to where they are heading and mating events. Roads are blocked for the crowds of immigration, and the doorstep of the office buildings are packed with the red crabs, according to the Parks Australia Twitter.

Of course, The red crabs are encountering unexpected predators and traffic accidents while they are partaking in their life journeys. Some brave crabs are crossing the underpasses and some smarty-pants are climbing over the bridges this time of the year. Acting manager of Christmas Island, Bianca Priest said, “Christmas Island National Park staff put up kilometers of temporary barriers, erect signs and close roads across the island to protect millions of crabs leaving their forest homes for the coast,” she mentioned at the Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday.

Officials have helped to keep their journeys safe and keep nature running accordingly within the biological ecosystem. Once mating has taken place inside or near the burrows, and after males leave, females stay three days at their place to produce eggs. The females remain in the burrows for at least two weeks to develop their eggs. When their time comes they move to the shoreline to release their eggs.

The island will remain closed for crab migration in the near future.

Grammarly AI surges rapidly as an Assisting Writing Tool

According to Yahoo Finance, as one of the artificial intelligence software, Grammarly grew rapidly as a language assistance tool. It has gone up in value to above $13 billion due to its popularity and demand. Since 2015, Grammarly provides spelling and grammar checks for its customers.

AIs have become daily partners in most parts of our activities through Zoom meetings, Web News, school projects, emails, and so on. Grammarly has Cisco Systems, Inc., Dell Technologies, Inc., Google, and even WordPress as its customers. The valuation of the company has gone up from $1 billion in 2019 to $13 billion in 2021.

With more than 30 million daily users, its potential could only increase. This has happened with Samsung Electronics, Inc. Samsung expects to integrate Grammarly into its smartphone keyboard, which will allow its users access to Grammarly without being Grammarly’s direct customer.

Given the terrible reviews that Samsung phone keyboards have, especially with regards to autocorrect and word suggestions, Grammarly’s partnership will be highly beneficial to Samsung in attracting more customers and encouraging them to use the built-in keyboard, rather than downloading a new keyboard app to replace the Samsung keyboard with instead.

Price increase of 6.2% since last October

The largest price increase in the past 30 years has been seen, with a price increase of 6.2% in October versus October of last year. Gasoline prices are up 49.6 percent, and the higher energy costs are pushing prices of all other goods equally, according to Washington Post.

The shortages and higher prices had been limited to certain industries, but it is now overtaking other industries such as shelter, food, and new vehicles.

In fact, the price increase has tied with the biggest one-month increase since the Great Recession. Only airlines and alcohol saw price decrease.

In fact, the pandemic cannot be blamed as the sole reason for the increase, as those that were “short” had been replenished.

The Biden Administration has promised that it would get the inflation under control, although the $2 trillion spending bill for infrastructure does not seem to be helping to assuage those fears.

Even items such as eggs or meat are seeing sharp increases. Rent continues to rise, and while the wages are rising, not rising fast enough to catch up to the inflation.

Households and businesses are struggling, as some stated that the prices change on its way to the end user. This can be a problem if the households begin to behave as if inflation is likely to be a long term haul.
