A Cup of Poem~~

First Person-to-Person Coronavirus Spread Happens in US

Photo from NBC News : Washington State (1), California(2), Arizona(1), Illinois(1) as of Jan.30.2020 source from CDC

CDC confirmed that a woman who recently traveled to China and returned through Chicago airport spread the virus to her husband. Now with confirmed 6 cases, Illinois is attempting to verify 21 possible cases. CDC is verifying 92 more people for possible coronavirus infection. CDC already cleared 68 as testing negative for the coronavirus.

There are currently 7,800 confirmed infections globally, with most in China. CDC does not see a need to wear masks to protect oneself in public but did advise washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds and to avoid close interaction with people who were sick.

Sun’s surface is like Rice Cake: Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope produces Photo of the Sun

(Photo from Google Images)

The National Science Foundation’s 4-meter, preeminent solar telescope on the summit of Haleakala, Maui in Hawai’i captured the clearest image of the Sun’s surface to date, which showed a pattern of turbulent “boiling” plasma, covering the entire star.  Each cell-like structures’ sizes are comparable to the State of Texas.

These cells represent signature of violent motions which allow transportation of heat from the inside of the Sun to its surface, before collapsing back below the surface once cooled by the vacuum of space, in a process called convection.

National Science Foundation’s Inouye Solar Telescope will also be used to map the magnetic fields within the Sun’s corona, and will be used to help predict and understand the Sun’s effect on space weather and Earth.

Chaos after Chaos: Caribbean in Peril

On Tuesday, 1/28/20, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba at depth of 6.2 miles (10km). There were no immediate reports of casualties; however, the intensity forced Miami to issue temporary evacuations.

On Tuesday, 1/28/20, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Cuba at depth of 6.2 miles (10km). There were no immediate reports of casualties; however, the intensity forced Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) to issue evacuation warnings.

The PTWC withdrew the warning a few hours later, citing that the tsunami wave risk had passed.

Although there were no reported casualties, Caribbean continues to face serious risk from natural hazards as environmental and human behavior continues to affect the planet.

Boeing will Evict Peregrine Falcons from the MAX Hangar

After two fatal 737 Max crashes, Boeing plant in Renton, Washington remained idle. However, as the talks of plane crashes ensue, the two peregrine falcons that have nested within the plant will need to leave or risk being locked inside.

As peregrine falcons are typically very difficult to trap and rehomed, but it was also seen as being highly unusual, as in the northwest, birds typically wander and return to familiar areas to breed in spring and nest.

Boeing officials have contacted the USDA and hopes to try to relocate the birds or keep them evicted by closing the hangar, and hope that the birds relocate in time for their mating cycle.

Reaching flight speeds up to 200 mph (about third of 737 Max during flight), it seems almost fitting that one of the fastest birds chose a hangar to rest in.

A Cup of Poem~~

The coronavirus outbreak that started in Wuhan, China in US?

Photo from Google Images

Originating from Wuhan City in China, the coronavirus infected more than 400 people and caused at least 17 people to die. With one confirmed case of infection reported in Washington State, it is unclear whether another infection has taken hold in New Jersey. However, the hospital officials are taking all precautions in attempting to verify the diagnosis.

The coronavirus can cause fever, cough, shortness of breath and can develop into pneumonia. While China has quarantined Wuhan to prevent the spread of the virus, people who traveled to Wuhan recently could have been exposed to the virus.

It seems however, the general concern is that the risk to the public health is still low.

Japan’s Nuclear Levels Still Too High for Safe Olympics

The Japanese national safety standard for allowable radioactivity is 0.23 microsieverts per hour. For a good example, Tokyo averages at about 0.04 microsieverts per hour.

Greenpeace urged Japan to abandon Olympic activities including the Olympic torch relay in Fukushima, the site of extensive radioactive damage from the 2011 tsunami. Based on reading as high as 1.7 microsieverts per hour measured at one meter above the surface, and a reading of 71 microsieverts per hour at the surface level.

In response, Japan argued that it read 0.111 microsieverts per hour at the main entrance one day, and one of the fields showed a rating of 0.085 microsieverts per hour.

Given that Japan has been very inconsistent in acting upon its nuclear waste policy, it is unclear whether the data from Japan can be trusted. It is also questionable as to whether Greenpeace’s data can be trusted, given the organization’s reputation.

It would be advisable for a neutral third-party such as the UN or the International Atomic Energy Agency to step in and provide a non-partisan data, as an average person safely absorbs about 3.65 microsieverts a year.

Japan’s data may show that it is safe for olympic athletes to engage in sports in Fukushima, but if Greenpeace’s data is correct, then the international community is putting the lives of these valuable athletes in great danger.

Florida Will See Iguanas Rain Upon It

(Photo from Google Images)

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a warning to Florida via Twitter regarding the unseasonably cold temperatures and their effect on the local cold-blooded species.

In the Tweet, the NWS stated, “Iguanas are cold-blooded. They slow down or become immobile when temps drop into the 40s.” Iguanas however, do not die from the cold temperatures.

Similar situation arose in 2018 when Florida dealt with yet another unseasonably cold temperature.

A Cup of Poem~~

“Inhale blessing, exhale all my stresses out”
