Water crisis in Mississippi Worsens

A recent climate change hit Southern U.S. harshly, especially along the Mississippi River and states bordering it, ironically leading to heavy rainfalls and floods but also leading to a shortage of drinking water.

The city of Jackson in Mississippi has been severely damaged by the heavy floods that led to the malfunctioning of the water treatment plant and lowered water pump system. As of August 31, most of the city’s 150,000 residents were out of safe water to drink, wash, and flush. The Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency. He warned that there wasn’t enough running water “to fight fires, to reliably flush toilets and to meet other critical needs,” and ” It’s not clear when the city will have safe drinking water again,”.

The population of the city of Jackson is more than 80% black and they are living below the national poverty line. Thus, there is not much revenue for reviving these failed infrastructures.  Some elementary school students in this region go to another school due to a lack of water supply for the student’s basic needs.

Mississippi Department of Health posted on its Twitter account saying that “Jackson water is at risk for contamination. For safety, disinfect water by bringing it to a rolling boil for at least a minute, and using it when it cools for drinking, cooking, baby formula, and brushing teeth.”

The freshwater flood contains lots of unwanted blockages for the filtering system and it leads to slower flow into the water treatment system. Recent torrential rain in August flooded Mississippi’s Pearl River and Ross R. Barnett Reservoir providing the city of Jackson with bottleneck conditions. This contaminated water from the flood is not easy to treat with chemicals, and it takes a long time to get this done right.

Until then the Jackson residents have to boil water for more than 1 minute for their basic needs or wait in line to get some bottled water, that which is also seeing a shortage in supplies.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement, “Today, we’re delivering targeted relief that will help ensure borrowers are not placed in a worse position financially because of the pandemic and restore trust in a system that should be creating opportunity, not a debt trap.”

Unearthed Messages from the Past Warns of Famine

Photo from Accuweather.com

A recent drought and wildfires spread west of Europe, and one of the boulders emerged as the water level continued to drop in one of the European rivers. It reveals horrendous warning messages from at least 600 years ago.

A local German reporter, Olaf Koens shares the photo of the boulders on Twitter known as “Hungersteine” in translated English for “Hunger Stones” which have revealed their features in many European rivers recently.

It warns that when the water level went down as marked or scripted on the rock, famine will have arrived.

Another journalist from Politico, Aitor Hernández-Morales shared photos of the hunger stones on his Twitter showing on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018. It says “Wenn du mich seehst, dann weine.” Translated, “If you see me, weep.” the stone is located at the lower levels of water in the Elbe River which starts in the Czech Republic and goes through Germany to the North Sea.

According to a report from NPR, these stones were used as a “hydrological landmark” across Europe to mark desperately low river levels. These stones were visible when the drought occurred in 2018 in Europe.

According to the German media outlet, Deutsche Welle (DW), extreme heat has extended, with a lack of rainfall and prolonged drought, leading to many rivers drying up. These major rivers’ water levels are continuing to lower from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea through the Rhine River impacting the supply chains problem in Europe already.

The supply shipment was reduced to 30% load to pass through the obstructions of the low water levels in the Rhine River.

Henri Patriot, an oil analyst at UBS, told CNN Business that the low water levels in the Rhine are “challenging shipments of energy products, which is aggravating the commodity supply situation in Europe.”

Also when rivers dry up, some unwanted truths emerge on the surface too.

Human remains found in the suitcase bought from Auction in New Zealand

A family who resides in South Auckland bought a suitcase. As soon as they were brought from the auction, they unpacked their new purchase and found human remains inside the suitcase.

Authorities have launched a homicide investigation and are trying to identify the remains. The family is believed not to have been involved in the incident.

It is understood that the family had gone to the storage unit and purchased a trailer-load of goods – which included the suitcases – from a local storage company last Thursday. Local news outlets reported that they were being sold as part of an attempt to clear abandoned goods out of a locker. Bidders at similar auctions typically do not get to inspect the abandoned items closely before purchasing them – with many bids placed in the hope of a surprise valuable haul.

The discovery of remains was only made after the residents brought the property back to their home, detective inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said.

Several neighbors of the family reported a “wicked smell” coming from the property before police arrived, and one neighbor who worked at a crematorium said the smell was immediately recognizable.

Police officials have said their priority is to “confirm the identification of the deceased so that we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery”.

They added given the “nature of the discovery”, it would take time for the next of kin to be informed.

Enjoy Brief Cooler Temperatures; Expect heat belt to expand in 30 years

About 70 percent of Americans are experiencing cooler temperatures only possible during autumn. While it’s forecasted to be cooler than average in much of the eastern two-thirds of the country over the coming days, parts of the Northwest and California will bake, with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal.

The cooler weather is coming from the Arctic. According to the Washington Post, using NOAA’s HYSPLIT model, which simulates the movement and origins of air parcels all around the world, we can deduce that this air mass actually began over the Arctic back on Aug. 3. It was north of Greenland, then traced a loop before sauntering south over Hudson Bay and settling over the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic over the weekend. Now it’s spread across much of the eastern United States.

In a study from the nonprofit First Street Foundation, the heat risk prevails in the United States over the next 30 years. It uses heat index, which measures how hot it feels outside by including temperature and humidity. At least 46 percent of Americans will be in the heat belt line of 100 – plus and over the 30 years, increasing to 63 percent of the population.

The triple-digit heat days will be increased to 20 extra days per year and will be in most of the southern states. Texas and Florida could see over 70 consecutive days with the heat index over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Days like these won’t last, so enjoy them as much as you can.
