Authority found multiple guns, 25,000 round ammunitions from VTA shooter’s house

The mass killing shooter at VTA in San Jose on Wednesday morning which killed 10 people including himself, Samuel Cassidy (57) had kept 25,000 rounds of ammunition, 17 Molotov cocktails, 12 firearms, multiple gasoline cans at his house according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’ Office said Friday.

The killer was questioned by Homeland security in 2016. Since then, he kept books related to terrorism and hatred-filled notes about his coworkers. But not many people knew about this until Wednesday. According to Sheriff’s investigators, the gunman was an outsider at his work, and he was “a disgruntled VTA employee for many years”. This mass shooting left 7people dead at the scene and 2 people at the hospital, while the shooter killed himself with a self-inflicted wound.

Authority is still seeking the motive of this crime and how he collected so many weapons. According to Sheriff’s Office, “based on current evidence obtained, the suspect planned this event and the suspect was prepared to use his firearms to take as many lives as he could [have] Sheriff’s Deputies not made entry to stop his rampage,” in a statement.

The firearm squad discovered “potential explosive precursor materials” at the suspect’s home and the VTA rail yard, the sheriff’s office said. Bomb squad personnel scoured the rail yard and didn’t find any explosives.

Biden Calls for Further investigation of Covid-19 Origin

On Wednesday, President Biden set a time limit of 60 days for the investigation of the origin of Covid-19 and how it transferred throughout the globe. Once deemed conspiracy, the idea of Covid-19 being developed in a lab in Wuhan has now become a focal point for the new investigation. Most scientists tend to agree that the most likely origin of Covid-19 is likely to be from an animal reservoir similar to how other Sars virii had spread in past years; however, the idea that the virus was developed in Wuhan continues to challenge the main narrative. Technically, no one is 100 percent sure how the Covid-19 pandemic actually manifested to this extent. The scientists however, are cautionary about stating that this virus leaked from a lab; they’re simply interested in how the next pandemic might be prevented.
Since the Covid-19 outbreak was pinpointed to Wuhan, China, the world attitude towards Asians, with Chinese in particular, have gotten significantly negative; the U.S. saw a significant increase in hate crime perpetrated against Asian elderly, and many Asians have reported living in trepidation of receiving hatred from those around them.
According to NPR, Dr. Anthony Fauci (President Biden’s chief medical adviser) told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee on Wednesday, “The historical basis for pandemics evolving naturally from an animal reservoir is extremely strong. And it’s for that reason that we felt that something similar like this has a much higher likelihood. No one knows, not even I, 100% at this point, which is the reason why we are in favor of [the] further investigation.”
Dr. Gounder, an infectious disease expert who served on the Biden transition team’s COVID-19 advisory board, agrees.
Scientists said that they’d have to investigate, not for the purpose of confirming a conspiracy, but for the purpose of figuring out how to prevent this kind of virus-related pandemics in the future.
The hope is that the investigation will ultimately save many innocent lives and decrease hate crime and violence against innocent Asians living in America or Europe by finding the truth.

Army to allow more Hairstyles for Women in Active Duty

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army announced that all Army women personnel would be eligible for expanded hairstyles including ponytails, braids, twists, and cornrows that go as far down as the bottom of the shoulder blades. Not only that, the Army is allowing female personnel to apply lipstick, nail polish, and earrings as well.

Of course, there are exceptions on the length of the ponytails or braids for women doing tactical or physical training. For nail polish, extreme colors are not allowed for women, and only clear coats are allowed for men.

The Army has required women to follow a “bun” hairstyle for anyone who chose to keep long hair but had received complaints of hair loss, headaches, and hair scalp problems. Furthermore, when the women had to wear helmets for shooting practices or engagements, the buns made wearing helmets difficult, and it would hinder their sight for the purposes of shooting.

The new guidelines expand the options for African-American women’s hair. African-American women within the Army were required to engage in certain forms of hair tightening to abide by the Army’s restriction on hairstyles, which led the members of the Congressional Black Caucus to write a letter to the Secretary of Defense. In it, the Caucus stated, “African American women have often been required to meet unreasonable norms as it relates to acceptable standards of grooming in the workplace.” The Army first allowed some women to have some types of locks in 2017.

The restrictive hairstyle regulation had caused such damage to the scalp, that some female officers had chosen to shave her head completely. That used to be against the regulations, but it no longer is. The regulation also will be removing any offensive and out-of-date language.

The Army’s stance is that “professionalism” is important for soldiers’ appearance; the women (including African-American women) who serve say that the new regulations do not take away from professionalism; if anything, this freedom allows the women to properly wear headgear, perform their tasks effectively and look professional in uniform.

Prince William County announces Guidelines for Lifting “Face Covering”

Prince William County announced the new “Face Covering” lifting guidance in line with CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and VA Executive Order 72 for employees and members of the public who have been fully vaccinated. Those fully vaccinated are no longer required to wear a face-covering in many county facilities.
Anyone who is unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated is strongly encouraged to continue to wear a face covering. Unvaccinated and not fully vaccinated employees must continue to wear face coverings. The county does not currently plan to enforce the guidelines; rather it assumes all employees and members of the public not wearing face coverings are in compliance with the CDC guidelines.
“Fully vaccinated” means after two weeks of receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or two weeks after the single-dose Johnson & Johnson (Janessen) vaccine.
Social distancing and capacity restrictions will be lifted on May 28, 2021, with conference rooms operating at full capacity. The County plans to be fully open.
Many are concerned with the opening and worries that it could lead to another surge in infections based on those that have not abided by physical distancing, face-covering, or vaccinating guidelines, but it seems that both federal and state governments are willing to take the risk given the relatively high vaccination rates among US population.

Pro-Trump Counties in Oregon wants to be Idaho Instead

Several rural counties of Oregon want to move to Idaho due to their political preferences. The 5 counties approved joining Idaho through ballot measures this week, and two more counties are hoping to be part of this red movement as well. According to NPR, Mike McCarter, president of the advocacy group (Citizens for Greater Idaho) stated “This election proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon, and If we’re allowed to vote for which government officials we went, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well.”
These 7 counties voted for former President Trump in the 2020 election, and this advocacy group still wants to shift the borders. These counties are located in eastern and southern Oregon, and if this was to be allowed in the near future, then Idaho will be a stronger red state since 1992. Idaho is one of the red states and these seven counties from Oregon will gain Idaho more congressional seats in the near future if this apportionment and redistricting rule will be proved by the legislatures of Oregon and Idaho and the U.S constitution.
Currently, the second congressional district of Oregon is red. As much of those that prefer Trump are in rural communities, Oregon likely does not benefit too highly from them. Nonetheless, they continue to be a vital part of the state of Oregon in terms of property taxes or other minor revenue streams. The red counties also have not considered whether their currently legal cannabis farms would stay legal if they were to join Idaho.
A few years ago, California wanted to be independent of the U.S, and some of them were also prone to stay red. Despite the obvious “blueness” of California during major election cycles, should this continue, more and more people are likely to see the democratic party becoming less favored along the west coast, and their votes not an automatic default blue.
One congressional district requires at least 30,000 population and these seven counties could be enough to gather one more seat for the red in the red state or stay as it is in the blue state.
As the balance between the blue and red states continue to sway from cycle to cycle, and as the mid-year elections are soon coming upon us, it is important to take these desires into account, not just in the typical southern or mid-western states, but even in “default blue” states like Oregon and California.

Israel’s Air Strikes Kill Doctors

Photo from Google Images

On Sunday, Israelis struck GAZA strips leaving the Palestinian people devastated. Among the victims was Dr. Abu al-Ouf, who was there with his extended families, which included his mother and father, his wife Reem, and their 17-year-old son Tawfik and their 12-year-old-daughter Tala. According to BBC, Dr. Ayman Abu al-Ouf was the head of internal medicine at the Palestinian territory’s main hospital, and he had dedicated his life to the people who live in very poor conditions in Palestine.

“This is a really big loss not just for us personally because we knew Ayman – this is also a loss for his patients and students,” Dr. Ghaith al-Zaanin, a close friend and former colleague who lives in Canada, told the BBC. Dr. Abu al-Ouf was a Coronavirus responder, and he had treated many Palestinian patients and had taught many new generation doctors who are in mourning for the death of their well-respected doctor and teacher.

Dr. Abu al-Ouf lived in Gaza City’s al-Wahda street, which is lined with apartment buildings, shops. He had left the hospital to go home just one hour before hitting the airstrike. He was rescued from his collapsed home 12 hours after the airstrike, but it was too late, as he died at the hospital.

The Israeli military said that it had, “struck an underground military structure” belonging to Hamas, and “The underground foundations collapsed, causing the civilian housing above them to collapse, causing unintended casualties.” Nonetheless, more than 200 people (including 61 women and 36 children) have died and 1,500 are injured in Gaza, while Israeli death includes 10 people, including 2 children.

President Biden reached out to Israel’s PM Netanyahu that he expects ‘de-escalating conflict’ and to a cease-fire on Gaza to prevent continued death of innocent people, but Netanyahu responded on his Twitter that, “[he is] determined to continue this operation until its goal is achieved.”

It is unclear as to how the world sees Israel’s behavior, but tensions are growing as they’re beginning to see Israel as the aggressor and Palestine as the victim.

Japanese Doctor’s Association Calls for “No Olympic”

A Japanese medical organization called to cancel the Tokyo Olympics on the grounds that the Tokyo medical practitioners and facilities are not capable of treating patients due to the rapidly surging number of coronavirus patients in Japan.  About 6,000 medical practitioners are raising their voices to request the cancellation of this coming summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The Medical practitioners of the region where the Tokyo Olympic will be held said in the letter to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s website as an open letter,  “We strongly request that the authorities convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that holding the Olympics is difficult and to obtain its decision to cancel the Games” on Monday.

The shortage of medical staff and high demand for hospital beds are the most significant issues in the area of the locations where the summer Olympics will be held. Furthermore, 83% of Japanese citizens disagree with their Government’s decision of hosting the Summer Olympics and are worrying about the possibility of Coronavirus infection increasing due to the low percentage of vaccinations currently completed in Japan. According to Reuters, only 3.5% of the Japanese population is vaccinated.

However, Suga urges Japan can host “a safe and secure Olympics” as long as there are appropriate safety measures taken. The Japanese government is pushing to host the Olympics this summer despite public sentiment and concerns from participant countries fearing the safety of their athletes. While it is true that spectators will not be allowed on the premises, at least 15,000 athletes, thousands of coaches, trainers, and support personnel, as well as those in the media, will likely be involved in just one aspect of the Olympics.

North Korea is the first country that announced it will be skipping this round of the Olympics.

Virginia under State of Emergency for Gas Shortage

Virginia Governor Northam declared a state of emergency after the gasoline pipeline was shut down from a cyberattack demanding a ransom to reopen on Tuesday.

The emergency declaration lets state agencies issue waivers to increase gas supply and enforce penalties against gas stations involved in price gouging due to the shortage. The Environmental Protection Agency has also issued an emergency fuel waiver on Tuesday to help with fuel shortages in states including Virginia due to the pipeline shutdown. The waiver is expected to continue until May 18.

The perpetrators of the shutdown are from a cybercrime group known as DarkSide, which has carried out an attack shutting down 5,500 miles of pipeline. This pipeline supplies half of the gasoline to the east coast and runs from Texas to New Jersey.

At the moment, however, Maryland or DC are less impacted than Virginia; as Virginia reported to have lost more than 44 percent of its total gasoline capacity yet DC has only reported 10 percent loss.

This is an ongoing development.

Veteran Murdering Nurse Sentenced to Life

Ex-nursing assistance at the VA hospital was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday. During her trial, She confessed to using insulin to murder seven elderly patients at a VA hospital. During sentencing, Judge Thomas Kleeh called Reta Mays (46) a monster of the “worst kind. You are the monster no one sees coming,” He delivered a life sentence for each murder victim, plus 20 years for an eighth victim she tried to kill.

Mays is not eligible for probation for the seven life sentences and is ordered to pay restitution to the victim’s families. The victims are aged from 81 to 96 and served in the Navy, Army, and Air Force during WWII, the Vietnam war, and the Korean war. Mays pleaded guilty last year to murdering the seven veterans and to assault an eighth with intended murder. Mays killed all seven veterans and assaulted the eight veteran with intent to kill at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center while she was working as nurse assistance from July 2017 to June 2018.

After the hearing, the inspector general at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs released the results of an investigation concluding the “serious, pervasive, and failures” at the hospital which allowed the killings to go undetected for nearly a year. Every time a patient under her care passed away, she said, “Something always happens when I’m in the room, and I don’t know why,” and faked trying to save lives as a nurse assistant.
