Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Quits Fall Semester at GWU Law school

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas quit his teaching position at George Washington University School of Law during this semester due to student protests over his opinion overturning the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision. The possibility of offering a course in the Spring Semester is still open, however. GWU Law School denied that he had been fired.

Mr. Thomas taught Constitutional Seminar at GWU since 2011; however, due to the controversy surrounding his opinion with regard to women’s abortion rights as well as his suggestion of revisiting same-sex marriage, many students have voiced their disapproval of him. The class is now being taught by one of Mr. Thomas’ former law clerks and current Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Armed Services, Greggory Maggs only.

According to NPR, “The students were promptly informed of Justice Thomas’ decision by his co-instructor who will continue to offer the seminar this fall,” GWU spokesperson Joshua Grossman said Thursday.

US Government Offers to Trade Prisoners with Russia

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken stated that the United States and Russia had “communicated repeatedly and directly on that proposal” as related to trading prisoners between the two countries at a news conference in Washington Wednesday.

Sec. Blinken said that the United States had “put a substantial proposal on the table weeks ago” in talks with Russia to a safe homecoming of two Americans: The basketball star, Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security company executive. A prisoner of the counterpart of the two Americans is Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer as a detainee in the US.

According to CNN, the person of a detainee in the US, Mr. Bout is serving a 25-year federal prison sentence for conspiring to sell weapons to the people who have planned to kill Americans. Russian officials have pressed for Mr. Bout’s case for years, and in recent weeks Russian media outlets had directly linked his case to Ms. Griner’s.

Ms. Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport on charges that she carried hashish oil in her luggage. She accidentally packed a small amount of the cannabis-related substance that she takes for her doctor-prescribed pain medication, but Russia has very strict drug laws. She pleaded guilty to the drug charges against her in mid-February.

Mr. Paul Whelan was detained at a Moscow hotel in 2019 and charged with espionage.

The Russian government’s intention regarding this trade is unknown in the midst of the war between Ukraine. The Biden administration got pressure from the citizens in the US who have asked to bring Americans who are abroad back to their homes in safety.

Record Rainfall in St. Louis to Flood Warning in the Northeast

Photo obtained from Weather.com

At least 1 died with many residents stranded due to flash flooding in St. Louis. Rainfall set a new record high in more than 100 years. It started late Monday night and around 2 am. With more than 7.68 inches of rain fell in St. Louis — an event with less than a 1 in 1,000 chance of occurring in any given year, according to the Weather Service. Some areas northwest of the city of St. Louis saw rainfall totals up to a foot.

Firefighters had responded to roughly 70 rescues by late Tuesday morning, St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson told reporters. On one block in the western part of the city, the fire department said, it had used an inflatable boat to rescue six people and six dogs trapped in about 18 homes amid severe flooding. About 15 people chose to shelter in place.

Around 10 a.m., a person’s body was pulled out from a car that had been covered by about 8½ feet of floodwater, Jenkerson said. He said the incident was under investigation and did not provide additional details.

Weather.com warned, “Make sure you have multiple ways of receiving National Weather Service flood warnings, including while you’re sleeping, particularly if a rare flash flood emergency is issued. Know how to quickly get to high ground if you live in an area prone to flash flooding. Never drive into flood water, no matter how large your vehicle is. The majority of flood-related deaths occur in vehicles swept away or submerged.”

Historic flooding in St. Louis is just the first chapter in a multi-day flash flood threat that extends over a broad stripe from the Appalachians to the Front Range of the Rockies due to a classic, stagnant summer weather pattern until this weekend.

A woman pulled out a gun at a ticket counter in Dallas Love Field Airport around 11 am on Monday. She announced that her husband is cheating on her and began to shoot toward the ceiling. She was confronted and shot in her lower extremities by officers who were nearby.

No other injuries have been reported but the airport was closed for a few hours to calm down. Dallas Chief of Police Eddie Garcia stated that the suspect was identified as Portia Odufuwa (37) and she came to the airport just before 11 am. Odufuwa changed her clothes at a restroom. Garcia said that she wore a hoody or something other than what she arrived in.

There is no injury reported with this incident. Garcia stated that “At this point, we don’t know where exactly the individual was aiming. From what we are seeing she was aiming at the ceiling,” Garcia said. ” There are several rounds that were found.” According to NBC,

The airport officers working inside confronted Odufuwa at about 11:23 a.m. and shot her in her lower extremities. The woman was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in an unknown condition. No further information about her or the motivation behind the shooting or who dropped her off at the airport has been confirmed by police.

Covid-19 Surges Due to Omicron’s Subvariant

The BA.5 subvariant of omicron is surging in the United States as extreme heat hits the west coast states along the mid and southern states. Covid-19 cases have increased on a daily basis due to this subvariant of omicron cases dominating the U.S.

Airplanes are fully booked, and flights are often delayed, but summer travelers are eager to make up for their summer vacations and return home sick. 29 states reported more cases than the week before as of July 20, according to USA TODAY. 20 states had more deaths than a week earlier in the data from Johns Hopkins University.

The BA.5 was detected in the U.S. at the end of April and only 3 months passed from the first patient before the BA.5 cases rose to nearly 80% of all cases according to Yahoo news. The common symptoms of BA.5 are very similar to other variants. Those infected with BA.5 may develop a cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, headaches, and muscle pains but are less likely to experience shortness of breath or lose their senses of taste or smell. It can last a few days to a few weeks.

If you’re fever-free for 24 hours and symptoms are improving after five days, the CDC says you can end isolation but continue to take precautions for five additional days. This includes wearing well-fitted masks around others inside and outside the home and avoiding travel.

Solar Storm will hit on Earth by Tomorrow

captured on the Twitter account of Solar Storm Watch

A solar storm will hit on Earth by Tomorrow. According to the Joint USAF/NOAA, Solar activity is expected to be low with a chance for M-class flares and a slight chance for an X-class flare on days one, two, and three (July 19-21). This solar storm will arrive without any obstacle, but our GPS, radio blackouts, and cell communication are going to be influenced.

This week, many countries are burning with hot temperatures, and a solar storm is expected to be more dangerous to high-flying latitude airplane travelers and crews. Researchers and Scientists all over the world predict this solar storm has a strong flare, and it is striking Earth. NASA stated that the solar flare might have a huge impact on Earth’s geomagnetic field on the evening of July 19.

This solar flare explosion is likely caused due to the Sun’s discharge of protons. The G1-class solar storm on March 22 brought landfall a few days later. Solar radiation storms occur when a large-scale magnetic field eruption when coronal mass ejection (CME) and solar flare are associated. According to NOAA, The most important particles are protons which can get accelerated to large fractions of the speed of light. At these velocities, the protons can traverse the 150 million km from the sun to Earth in just 10 minutes or less. When they reach Earth, the fast-moving protons penetrate the magnetosphere that shield Earth from lower energy charged particles. Once inside the magnetosphere, the particles are guided down the magnetic field lines and penetrate into the atmosphere near the north and south poles.

SWPC currently forecasts the probability of S1 (Minor Radiation Storm scale) occurrence as part of our 3-day forecast and forecast discussion products and issues a warning for an expected S1 or higher event; as well as a warning for when the 100 MeV proton level is expected to reach 1 pfu. Additionally, SWPC issues alert for when each NOAA Space Weather Scale Radiation Storm level is reached (S1-S5) and/or when the 100 MeV protons reach 1 pfu.

Enjoy the Full “Buck Moon” Tonight or Salmon Moon… It Depends

The second supermoon in 2022 is lighting the world tonight, and it gives us the brightest moment at 2:38 Eastern Time. It will be below the horizon at the time so wait for 4 hours to see the moon in the sky.

July 13th’s Full Buck Moon orbit is the closest, biggest, and brightest due to its proximity to earth and lowest in the sky. The Buck Moon will be 222,089.3 miles (357,418 km) from Earth. According to Almanac.com, “the full moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full growth mode at this time. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by.”

There are many other alternative names for these supermoon reference animals, such as Feather Moulting Moon (Cree) and Salmon Moon, a Tlingit (a member or a language of a North American people of the coasts and islands of southeastern Alaska and adjacent British Columbia.) term indicating when fish returned to the area and were ready to be harvested.

Plants and other variants refer to this supermoon, Berry Moon (Anishinaabe), Moon When the Chokecherries are Ripe (Dakota), Month of the Ripe Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Raspberry Moon (Algonquin, Ojibwe). All these names refer to the riping season of sweet berries in the hot summer.

Western Abenaki, a Native American tribe speaking Algonquian call this moon Thunder Moon; they lived in parts of Canada and the Northeast United States until being pushed west during American expansion, and Halfway Summer Moon (Anishinaabe) are alternative variants that refer to the weather and season.

The name of the Super Moon refers to the life of the Native Americans and how they lived. Those Full moons on their calendar reminded them to remember to harvest and give ceremonies to their gods.

The location of where you are matters when it comes to seeing the different shapes of the Buck Moon. However, the 13th of July is the best night to experience the full moon. Tomorrow, you will see 98.7 of the waning gibbous moon instead.

The next Super Moon, Sturgeon Moon, will be in our sight on August 11 expected.
