A Landslide hits Homes 3 people dead and 3 missing in Alaska

One unexpected event left 3 people dead,1 person injured and 3 people missing due to heavy rain, snow, and wind gusts days earlier causing a landslide that collapsed over homes in Southeast Alaska, Wrangell on Monday.

The event occurred along the Zimovia Highway, about 11 miles south of Wrangell, located in southeast Alaska. The first responders said the flow of the rock debris damaged at least 3 homes. The ground was unstable and it could lead to additional movement of terrain.

Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Austin McDaniel said at a news briefing that crews on Tuesday morning rescued a woman who had been on the upper floor of a home that was struck. She was in good condition and undergoing medical care. According to AP, The slide was estimated about 450 feet wide at the remote fishing community in the mountainous region.

“This afternoon a drone operator located two deceased adults in the slide area. The bodies were recovered from the slide area this evening. At this time, troopers believe that two juveniles and one adult are still unaccounted for in the slide area,” the Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

Over 100 mph of wind gusts heavy snow, and rain brought a power outage in the region. Snow, ice, and another storm are heading to Alaska on the Thanksgiving weekend.

Many travelers are heading to the northeast coast also not expecting their travel delayed or canceled at some point. However, in Florida and North Carolina, the 95 weather corridor is facing heavy rain, and windy conditions from Tuesday to Wednesday to hold on traffic.
