Type D Personality related with Hyperthyroidism

According to, a study found that the type D personality is linked to Hyperthyroid disease. Type D personality is associated with negative emotions: higher levels of anxiety, stress, depression, and social withdrawal. This study was conducted by researchers all over Europe, and at least 3,500 people who were surveyed showed hypothyroidism. They found a correlation between type D personality and poor treatment outcomes, including persistent symptoms, and dissatisfaction of hyperthyroid patients.

The study discovered that over 50% of people with treated hypothyroidism in the study were found to have a type D personality. This study suggests that more research should be done on type D personality and hypothyroidism for treatments in an effective way with patient satisfaction.

The research suggests a deeper study into personality traits could lead to the treatments success of hypothyroid patients’ personalized interventions with satisfaction and quality of life. This study’s results are from “a total of 3915 responses received, 3523 of which were valid. The prevalence of type D personality was 54.2%. Statistically significant associations were found between type D personality and several respondent characteristics (age, marital status, ethnicity, household income, comorbidities, type of treatment for hypothyroidism, most recent TSH level), anxiety, depression, somatization, poor control of the symptoms of hypothyroidism by medication, dissatisfaction with care and treatment of hypothyroidism, and a negative impact of hypothyroidism on everyday living.”This new research was published in the  Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Between 10-15 % of people with treated hypothyroidism experience persistent symptoms despite achieving normal thyroid hormone levels, and underlying causes are unclear.
