A New Year’s Eve Celebration in the Bund waterfront area of Shanghai went awry when a stampede killed 35 people and injured 42. Packed in narrow streets to see the events, most of the people gathered could not even see the majority of events, as they were taken to the hospital or lost items on the streets.
According to Reuters,”It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede, but state media and a witness said the incident was caused when people tried picking up fake money thrown from a building.”
A historical district with more than 2 million inhabitants, Bund area has recently seen some renovation. According to USAToday, 300,000 people were in attendance to see the New Year’s Laser Show last year. This year, the local government has cancelled the show, and limited attendance to the celebration to 2,000 invitation-only event.
