President Obama Surprises Joe Biden with Presidential Medal of Freedom

1월 12일(현지 시간) 미국 시민으로서 가장 명예로운 “Presidential Medal of Freedom” 을 Joe Biden부통령에 수여하는 수여식이 백악관에서 조 바이든 가족과 백악관 스탭들이 함께 한 자리에서 서프라이스 이벤트로 있었다. 전혀 예기치 않은 갑작스런 대통령의 자유 훈장을 받게된 조 바이든 부통령은 놀라서 한 동안 말을 잊지 못했으며, 뒤로 돌아서서 눈물을 닦았다.

오바마 대통령은, “the best vice president America has ever had, …an extraordinary man, with an extraordinary career in public service” 라고 치하하며, 부드러운 성정으로 국가를 잘 보필하였으며, 전 세계를 잘 아우르는 능력이 넘친 멋진 친구이자, 형제였다고 전 대통령중에서 오직 3명만 받는 명예훈장을 조 바이든 부통령에게 수여한다고 밝혔다.

조 바이든 부통령은, “This is a remarkable man, and I just hope the asterisk in history that will be attached to my name — when they talk about this president, that I can say I was part of, part of the “journey of a remarkable man who did remarkable things for his country, … I don’t deserve this but this medal came from President’s heart” 라고 말하며 지난 8년동안의 훌륭한 대통령과 함께 한 멋진 여정이었다고 술회했다.

조 바이든 부통령은 “어느 대통령보다 더 “intense pressure” 를 받은 대통령은 없습니다. 난 당신이 그런 상황을 겪을 때 그것을 직감으로 문제를 해결하는 것을 봐 왔습니다. 당신은 참 훌륭한 대통령이며, 당신과 함께 할 수 있어서 좋았습니다.” 라고 말했다.
