The newest canyon found on Mars has overtaken any canyons on Earth for the largest canyon in the solar system. Named Valles Marineris Canyon, it slices along the Martian equator for about 2,500 miles and would reach from New York City to San Francisco. The deepest canyon floor is at about 7 miles deep, which is deep as some parts of the deepest parts of the Earth’s ocean.
The photos of the canyon was taken using the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and although it is not yet clear as to how it formed, the European Space Agency seems to think that the largest portions cracked open billions of years ago, with the volcanic creation of the Tharsis bulge where Olympus Mons is located at.
