On October 7, 2020, The Department of Justice (DOJ) charged a mail carrier for dumping mail, including ballots, in dumpsters in New Jersey.
26-year-old Nicholas Beauchene was arrested and charged with one count of delay of mail and one count of obstruction of mail. If found guilty of both, he could be sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison, as well as $255,000 fine.
Since starting work in July, he is accused of dumping 1,875 pieces of mail. In total about 99 ballots were found at the 2 dumpster sites, and they were eventually delivered.
The mail was found by a North Arlington resident, who discovered the mail while throwing out his own trash.
In a sensitive political climate where voters are fearing the loss or sabotage of their mail-in-ballots, this news is terribly unreassuring.
