전 공군 정보사 출신 여성,Monica Elfriede Witt(39) 씨가 이란에 펜타곤에서 대 이란 각종 정보를 흘려준 것이 포착되어 구속되었다고 밝혔다. Witt 씨는 지난 1997년에 공군에 입사한 후 2008년까지 공군 정보국에서 근무하다가 그 후는 임시직으로 근무한 것으로 알려지고 있다. 임시직으로 근무할 당시 Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps 에 포섭된 것으로 FBI는 밝혔다. 그 당시 펜타곤에서 근무하는 대 이란 정보국의 인사정보를 노출 시킨것으로 밝혀졌다.

Witt 씨는 이란 정부에서 주택과 컴퓨터를 구입해 준 것으로 페이스 북을 통해 정보국과 관련된 인사들의 정보를 흘린 것으로 보고 있다. 결국 이러한 정보들이 미국 정보국 직원들의 안전을 위협하는 중요한 정보였다는 것과 이들 정보를 이란 출신 사이버 범죄단들과 연결되어 있었다는 것이다.

기소장에 따르면, Witt 씨는 미국 정부에 의해 제제를 받고 있는 테러리스트 그룹인 IRGC(Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) 을 위해 지난 2013년 부터 일한 것으로 알려졌다.

FBI News 에 따르면, 미국 텍사스 출신의 Witt 씨는 이란 출신의 다른 4명의 해커들과 연결되어 있는 것으로 알려졌으며, “The indictment also charges Mojtaba Mosoumpour, Behzad Mesri, Hossein Parvar, and Mohamad Paryar with conspiring to commit computer intrusions targeting current and former U.S. government agents. The four IRGC-affiliated actors allegedly used information provided by Witt to send messages through email and social media accounts that contained links and attachments that would deploy malware and establish covert access to the targeted individuals’ computers and networks.

Witt and the four charged cyber conspirators are believed to still be in Iran, but arrest warrants have been issued should they travel out of that country. The U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control also announced sanctions today against several Iranian entities that played a role in the alleged espionage.

“Today should serve as a warning to those who seek out our country’s current and former national security personnel for the sensitive information they have—and to those individuals themselves,” stressed Tabb. “The FBI takes the oath we swear seriously and will pursue those who do not.”

She had access to ongoing counterintelligence operations and the true names of intelligence assets and the identities of American officials involved in their recruitment. 아직 이들 모두는 이란에 상주하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 그러나 구속영장이 발부된 이상 어쩌면 그들이 이란을 떠나 다른 곳으로 갈 확률도 무시할 수는 없다고 덧 붙였다.
