Expat Utopia is Utopia No More

Drug trafficking ruins every corner of the American continent from the south to the north. At the same time, U.S. citizens want to retire to an affordable and peaceful country. Many originally chose Ecuador.

The newly elected president, Daniel Noboa (36) gave the order on Tuesday to ‘neutralize’ criminal gangs. This small country has been a hub of drug trafficking ports to the U.S. and Europe. As a result, the government and the drug cartels are at war.

President Noboa declared a state of emergency after the prison break of one of the most notorious narco bosses, and residents are leaving the country in fear. At least 10 people were killed by the gangs on Tuesday.

In the port city of Guayaquil, attackers wearing balaclavas and firing shots stormed a state-owned TV station on Tuesday, where they took a few journalists and staff members as their hostages on air. The drug mafias bragged about their power over the Ecuadorian government until they were later held at gunpoint to stand down by the Ecuadorian police.

Gangsters kidnapped several police officers and forced one of the hostages to read their statement to President Noboa, “You declared a state of emergency. We declare police, civilians, and soldiers to be the spoils of war,” and “Anyone found on the streets after 11:00 p.m., ‘will be executed.'”

The U.S. Embassy canceled consular services in Quito on Wednesday and said they will reopen at a later date, according to CBS News.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says the gang’s activity is a “direct attack on democracy and the rule of law.” Other country’s embassies in Ecuador are carefully looking at the development of events.

Peru declared a state of emergency due to the border with Ecuador. France and Russia advised their citizens not to travel to Ecuador.

The Expat Utopia is now being held hostage by the drug mafia, and it is unclear whether it will ever return to “peace” or when.
