5월 19일 적어도 네 개의 암 환자 기금 모금 단체가  환자들을 위한다는 명목으로 기금을 모금한 후, 제대로 전달하지 않고, 모은 기금의 85%에서 90%가 잘못 사용된 점에 대해 미국 정부가 그들을 향해 사정의 칼을 뽑았다. 이들 단체들은 전 50개주를 통해 모금한 뒤, 아주 적은 금액만 환자에게 돌려준 후 애당초 목적과는 달리 사용해서 말썽이다.  두 개의 기금 모금 단체는 정부와의 협상을 통해 그 단체들을 폐쇄하기로 결정했으나 두개의 단체는 여전히 미국 정부와 싸움중이다.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and states charged the Cancer Fund of America, The Breast Cancer Support Services Inc, The Children’s Cancer Fund of America, and the Breast Cancer Society Inc. with fradulent collection and spending of millions of dollars in donations, while using only 1% gathered toward actual cancer research.

The Children’s Cancer Fund of America and Breast Cancer Society Inc. are planned to be shut down.  The Cancer Fund of America and Cancer Support Services organization are fighting the charges.
