Cornell University Student arrested in connection with Antisemitism

Recently, many students from universities have threatened Jewish communities on college campuses after Israel’s response to Hamas militants has been broadcast all over the world by Gaza citizens.

A Cornell University junior, Patrick Dai (21) was arrested and charged in connection with antisemitic online threats made against Connell University’s Jewish community on Tuesday, according to CNN.

Dai was arrested for “a federal criminal complaint charging that he posted” on the Connell section of a discussion website and “threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications,” the US attorney’s office for New York’s northern district said.

Dai posted in an online discussion board and he allegedly threatened to “shoot up” a campus building. In another post, he said he would “stab” or “slit the throat” of Jewish men, and “rape or throw off a cliff Jewish women” he encounters on campus. He said he would behead Jewish babies and threatened to “bring an assault rifle to campus and shoot all you Jewish people,” prosecutors said, attributing the words to Dai, according to NBC.

He was slated to make an initial appearance in Syracuse federal court Wednesday, prosecutors said. If convicted, he would face a maximum of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The federal complaint filed against Dai states he admitted to making the threats. “Dai admitted, after receiving Miranda warnings, that he was the person who used the internet to post the threatening messages described above,” the complaint, citing an interview of the suspect by the FBI earlier in the day, said.

The New York Governor, Kathy Hochul said a person of interest was in the custody of New York State Police for questioning.

Gov. Hochul announced for budget of $75 million to combat hate crimes, and “Public safety is my top priority,” the governor said.
