Cormac McCarthy passes away at age 89

Cormac McCarthy (July 20, 1933 – June 13, 2023) changed his address to the up on June 13, 2023. “Cormac McCarthy isn’t dead. He’s too tough to die” confirmed the LA Times in 2016 after a hoax spread many times. The nihilistic writer who authored twelve novels, two plays, five screenplays, and three short stories spanning the Western and post-apocalyptic genres has unfortunately since passed. McCarthy’s writing style was unique, with simplistic usage of punctuation and attribution. According to the Guardian, “Cormac McCarthy’s work is also full of beauty and love. McCarthy was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was raised in Tennessee. He enrolled at the University of Tennessee but dropped out to join the U.S. Air Force. His debut novel, The Orchard Keeper, was published in 1965, and won him many literary grants. He was able to travel to Southern Europe and wrote his second novel, Outer Dark. His novels generally received positive reviews but were not commercial successes. Blood Meridian, published in 1985, received lukewarm critical and commercial reception but has since become known as his magnum opus, with some seeing the work as a Great American Novel.

His first widespread success was obtained with All the Pretty Horses in 1992. The book was followed by The Crossing in 1994 and Cities of the Plain in 1998. They are part of his Border Triology. McCarthy’s 2006 novel The Road won 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction.

Many of McCarthy’s works have been adapted into film, with critical and commercial success for most of them. No Country for Old Men, a 2007 movie won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
