A woman was traveling to Istanbul from Dulles airport on Friday and reported carrying $5,000.
Customs and Borders (CBP) officers then checked her carry-on bag to find $30,000 more.
The total seized was $35,016.
There is no legal limit on the amount of money a US citizen can carry out of the country.
However, CBP requires that any amount above $10,000 be reported.
Those who wish for the return of money must prove both the source and intended use are legitimate.
CBP seizes $207,000 daily for illicit purposes everyday.
