NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) is planning for a rover to visit the planet of Venus. With surface temperature above 450 degrees celsius (over 750 degrees Fahrenheit), and surface pressure that is 92 times that of Earth, Venus is certainly not an easy planet.

Because all electronic equipments of today become nonfunctional at 250 degrees Fahrenheit, NASA is offering  $30,000 to the top prize winner who can design an obstacle avoidance sensor that does not rely on electronic systems. As the rover is meant to stay on the grounds of Venus for months, it is vital that the sensor can withstand extreme conditions for a very long time.

Billionaires might be headed to Mars, but NASA will take the daunting task of heading to Venus.
